An abstract piece standing on a low plinth set in the middle of a circular bed of pebbles. A large ring has been divided horizontally into five segments, each offset slightly against the other. In the centre of the ring a smaller cylindrical section is suspended by a steel bar through its middle. The artist won an open competition organised by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Hospitals Trust to secure this commission. The building of the sculpture was paid for by Tarmac plc, with the whole project being a joint venture between the company, the University of Wolverhampton (where the artist was a student) and the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Hospitals Trust. The piece was commissioned by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Hospitals Trust to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the National Health Service. The five segments of the ring symbolise the five decades of the NHS from 1948 until 1998. According to the artist, "my form is based upon a circle, representing the circle of life, the idea of caring for people from the cradle to the grave."
